ScreenVue is the result of a joint venture and partnership between Christian Video Licensing International (CVLI) and Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) and Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC).

ScreenVue first launched in 2003 as a service of CVLI. The CVLI Church Video License provides legal coverage for churches and for other ministry organizations to show DVDs, Blu-rays, movie downloads and streams of motion pictures. Each organization needs to be specifically covered. Coverage includes playing just a few seconds of a movie all the way up to showing the full-length feature.

Each *Total Producer Church Video License* and *Standard CVLI Video License* (or any *Church Video Licence* globally) comes with free ScreenVue Vault access.

The ScreenVue Vault offers 11,000+ Scene Ideas and Downloads from a variety of movies and resources. 

ScreenVue saves you hours of time finding that perfect movie illustration for next Sunday’s sermon, child or youth service, or video announcement!

### CCLI

Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) was established in 1988 to provide churches with simple, affordable solutions to complex copyright issues. CCLI helps churches maintain their integrity while giving them the freedom to worship expressively and spontaneously.

Churches often face copyright infringement issues in two areas: 1) copying music without permission, and 2) showing movies without authorization.

For copying music to assist with congregational singing, the Church Copyright License provides blanket coverage for 300,000+ songs and 4,500+ publishers and song owners. Currently, global churches are using 600,000+ CCLI licenses.

### CVLI

From a unique partnership between Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) and Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC), Christian Video Licensing International (CVLI) and the Church Video License was formed in 2001.

The Church Video License provides churches with legal coverage to show all, or any portion of, thousands of movie titles from a number of movie producers, including all the major studios. Currently, the titles from almost 3,000 producers are represented by the Church Video License, including the titles that contain all the Scene Ideas and Scene Downloads that are part of the ScreenVue Vault.

__"Where can I find my Access Key to sign-in with?"__
- Every Church Video Licence globally and every *Total Producer Church Video License* (or *Standard CVLI Video License*) in the USA comes with FREE access to the ScreenVue Vault, which is unlocked with your Access Key. Your Access Key will be included in the monthly CVL update emails you receive. __"Why won't my Access Key work?"__
- The usual reason for the Access Key not to work (and a footer error message to appear) is that something is missing from the sign-in protocol.
- Enter the *Email address* associated with your Church Video License (or CCLI account).
- Enter the *Access Key* found in your last CVL update email (exactly, with no spaces).
- Select the *Terms of Use* and a *Keeping in Touch* option.
- You should be in! If you have done all this and still have a problem, please let us know and we'll dig further.

__"In the USA, why don't I have access as a CVL Family Values Package member?"__
- The *CVL Family Values Package* offers only 65+ studios and producers, and does not include any major/minor Hollywood studios - and does not come with ScreenVue Vault access.

__"What are the restrictions for streaming our service and including a movie scene? "__
- For churches that stream their services and want to include any part of a movie (the entire film or just a scene), the Church Video License terms do not cover streaming a movie scene - even if used in a sermon - over the internet to the general public.
- However, it is permissible to live stream a movie scene inside the facility as long as it is a closed-stream (not accessed publicly). 
- In light of COVID-19, the Church Video License has made temporary modifications to the license: For churches that stream their services and want to include any part of a movie, they can use a platform that is gated or private (password protected entry to only members and guests and not open to the general public), such as Zoom (requiring a password to join).

__"Can content in the ScreenVue Vault be used with a Church Video Licence anywhere in the world?"__

In present day at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-mer, Normandy, France, an elderly World War II veteran leads the way into the marbled crosses with his family following close behind.  Arriving at a certain grave, he crumbles to his knees and begins to cry.  The scene then cuts to the beginning of the Normandy invasion on the morning of June 6, 1944.

It's the beginning of the Normandy invasion on the morning of June 6, 1944: Dog Green Sector, Omaha Beach.  American soldiers in Charlie Company, 2nd Ranger Battalion, are seconds from reaching the beach in their assault craft -- quietly preparing themselves mentally for the approaching confrontation.  Captain John H. Miller is unable to stop a shaking hand as he takes one last drink from his canteen.  Other soldiers stare stoically ahead at the crashing waves, while others vomit onto the floor.        Pilot: "Clear the ramp!  30 seconds!  God be with you!"       Capt. Miller: "Port side stick!  Starboard side stick!  Move fast and clear those mortar holes!"     Sgt. Mike Horvath: "I want to see plenty of beach between men.  Five men is a juicy opportunity.  One man's a waste of ammo!"       Capt. Miller: "Keep the sand out of your weapons!  Keep those actions clear!  I'll see you on the beach!"             As explosions splash water into their faces, the men prepare for the gate to open -- some cower, some courageously set their jaw, another kisses a cross and prays.  They hit the beach and the gates open... immediately exposing them to a waiting German infantry.  Angry machine gun fire quickly cuts down dozens of men in seconds.      (Caution: tobacco chewing, vomiting and extreme violence at scene's end)

In one of the most realistic, gripping and painful scenes ever shot on film, American soldiers are cut to shreds and dismembered by German artillery and machine guns on the fabled beaches of Normandy.      (Caution: extremely bloody, gory and violent scene)

Trying to break through enemy lines and clear an exit off Dog Beach, Capt. Miller calls upon sharpshooter, Pvt. Daniel Jackson.  After being given cover-fire by his comrades -- including Capt. Miller acting as decoy, causing Sgt. Horvath to scold: "If your mother saw you do that, she'd be very upset!" -- Jackson makes it to the next defilade and takes aim at the machine gun nest above him (already responsible for killing hundreds of Americans).        Jackson takes aim through his scope: "Be not Thou far from me, O Lord..."  Boom! as his target is killed.  (Elsewhere, an Army chaplain has a soldier repeat after him before dying, while another scared soldier rubs rosary beads and prays in Latin).       Jackson (just before firing his next shot): "O my strength, haste Thee to help me..."   Boom!   This shot causes the entire machine-gun nest to crumble, allowing the falling Germans to be easily killed...         Capt. Miller: "Dog One exit, right here!"     Sgt. Horvath: "We're in business," as the soldiers start scrambling up the hill.        (Caution: extremely violent scene)

After a close-up of deceased soldier S. Ryan on Omaha Beach, the scene cuts back to US military offices where dozens of women furiously type letters to inform families of loved ones killed-in-action...      "Dear Mr. Brian Boyd, by now you have received full information..."       "Dear Mrs. Jensen: Your son Albert's death..."      "Our outfit feels his loss tremendously..."      "He was a fine soldier, and he believed very strongly..."      "Al was the one who held us all together.  He was the first to volunteer..."           However, one worker begins to collect several letters together, eventually taking the matter to the office Captain.  They discover that three of four brothers in the Ryan family have all died within days of each other, meaning that their mother will receive all three telegrams on the same day. He learns that the fourth and youngest son, Private First Class James Ryan of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne, is missing in action somewhere in France. Later, a military car arrives at a country home where Mrs. Ryan is busy washing dishes at the sink.  Looking out her window and seeing the car, she waits for them on the porch.  The car stops and two men exit the car -- one of them a chaplain -- causing Mom to immediately crumble to her knees and start to sob...        (Caution: disturbing scene; profanity immediately follows ending cue)

After hearing about the Ryan family tragedy (see previous Scene), the issue is brought before General George C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff.             One military officer argues that to pull the last brother would be foolish: "There's misdrops all over Normandy.  Now assuming Private Ryan even survived the jump, he could be anywhere.  In fact, he's probably KIA.  And frankly, sir, we go sending some sort of rescue mission, flat-hatting throughout swarms of German reinforcements all long our axis of advance, they're gonna be KIA, too."       The General says nothing.  He walks to his desk and retrieves a letter...       "I have a letter here, written a long time ago to a Mrs. Bixby in Boston.  So bear with me.  'Dear Madam, I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.  I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine that would attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming.  But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.' "        The General puts the letter down, sits, and starts quoting from memory.      " ' I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.  Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln.' "        All stand silent for a moment as the words soak in.      General: "That boy is alive.  We are going to send somebody to find him.  And we are going to get him the h--- out of there."       All: "Yes, sir."       (Caution: "hell" used once as profanity)

Capt. Miller looks for a translator to join them on their special mission -- "straight from the top" -- to find Private Ryan and return him home.  He walks amidst a group of soldiers working on maps...     "Attention!"         Capt. Miller: "As you were.  I'm looking for Corporal Upham, Timothy E..."        Upham: "I'm Upham, sir."       Miller: "I understand you speak French and German?"        Upham: "Yes, sir."       Miller: "How's your accent?"       Upham: "Uh, just a slight one in French. My German is clean, has a touch of Bavarian, sir."      Miller: "Very good.  You've been reassigned to me.  Grab your gear, we're going to a place called Neuville."       Upham: "Yes, sir.  ...Uh, sir?  Sir, there are Germans in Neuville."      Miller: "That's what I understand, Corporal."       Upham: "Um, sir, there are a lot of Germans in Neuville."       Miller: "You have a problem with that, Corporal?"       Upham: "No sir.  It's just that if you consider that I've never been in combat, sir.  I make maps and I translate.  That's it..."       Miller: "I need someone who speaks French and German. ...My two guys were killed."       Upham: "Yes, sir, it's just that I haven't held a weapon since basic training, sir."      Miller: "Did you fire the weapon in basic training?"     Upham: "Yes, sir."       Miller: "Well, then, get your gear."         Upham (running around nervously): "Yes, sir," while grabbing a very large typewriter, "Sir, may I bring..." as it falls to the ground, "May I bring my typewriter, sir?"         Miller says nothing and holds up a pencil.        Upham: "Yes, sir."           ...Miller (as they leave): "You should look on the bright side of things, Corporal.  For one thing, you don't need to carry those," throwing accessories to the typewriter away.

Starting their quest across the French countryside to find Private Ryan (see previous Scenes), the 8-man squad begin to grumble and question their mission.  Corporal Upham -- the disrespected new guy (since he's never seen combat) brought along to translate -- has just uttered the famous phrase, 'Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die.'         The men are clueless, so Capt. Miller explains: "Upham's talking about our duty as soldiers."       Upham: "Yes, sir."       Miller: "We all have orders and we have to follow them.  That supersedes everything, including your mothers."       Upham: "Yes, sir.  Thank you, sir."       Private Reiben: "Even if you think the mission's FUBAR, sir?"        Miller: "Especially if you think the mission's FUBAR."          ...Private Jackson: "Sir, I have an opinion on this matter."      Miller: "Well, by all means, share it with the squad."       Jackson: "Well, from my way of thinking, sir, this entire mission is a serious misallocation of valuable military resources. ...It seems to me, sir, that God gave me a special gift, made me a fine instrument of warfare."        Miller: "Reiben, pay attention!  Now, this is the way to gripe.  Continue, Jackson."        Jackson: "Well, what I mean by that, sir, if He was to put me and this here sniper rifle up to and including one mile of Adolf Hitler, with a clear line of sight, sir, pack your bags, fellas, war's over.  Amen."       Reiben: "Well, that's brilliant, bumpkin.  Hey, so Captain, what about you?  I mean, you don't gripe at all?"       Miller: "I don't gripe to you, Reiben.  I'm a captain.  There's a chain of command.  Gripes go up, not down.  Always up.  You gripe to me, I gripe to my superior officer, so on, so on, so on.  I don't gripe to you or in front of you.  You should know that, as a ranger."       Reiben: "I'm sorry, sir.  But, uh, let's say you weren't a captain or maybe I was a major.  What would you say then?"      Miller: "Well, in that case, I'd say, 'This is an excellent mission, sir, with an extremely valuable objective, sir, worthy of my best efforts, sir.  Moreover, I feel heartfelt sorrow for the mother of Private James Ryan and am willing to lay down my life and the lives of my men, especially you, Reiben, to ease her suffering."        Mellish: "He's good."      Caparzo: "I love him."            (Caution: profane acronym "FUBAR" used; profanity proceeds and follows scene; men smoking)

Aware of a German sniper in the area, the squad hides behind a crumbling wall as a Frenchman shouts somewhere from the other side.  After determining the man is a friendly, they run to what's left of his house -- split in two by artillery shells -- as he hides on the second floor with his wife and three crying children.  Upham translates and determines the man wants the Americans to take their children...      Captain Miller: "Kids?!"       Upham: "They want us to take the children," as the father begins handing them down.      Miller: "No, no, no, we can't take the kids."        Upham: "They think they'll be safe with us."      During the argument, Private Caparzo runs up and accepts a little girl.        Miller: "It's not gonna be safer with us!"       Sgt. Horvath (to Caparzo): "Are you nuts?!  Listen to the Captain!"        Miller: "Caparzo!  Put that kid back!" as he continues to bring her down, "Caparzo, put that little girl back!"       ...Caparzo: "I can't, she reminds me of my niece, sir."          Miller: "Caparzo, get that kid back up there!"

Continuing on their mission, the troop arrives in a small war-torn village.  While taking a break near some old buildings, a soldier accidentally knocks a large board into the side of a weathered wall.  The unstable wall quickly crumbles and reveals a half dozen Germans inside!  Both sides quickly lift their guns -- just a few feet from each other -- and start yelling for the other to put their guns down.  Chaos continues for several more intense seconds before the Germans are suddenly machine-gunned down by two American soldiers from a second story building across the street.          (Caution: end of scene ends in violence)

Continuing on their mission to find Private Ryan (see previous Scenes) -- risking life and limb and already losing one soldier -- the squad joins up with another company.  The captain in charge confirms they have a Private Ryan and calls him up...       Pvt. Ryan: "Sir, Private Ryan reporting as ordered."       Capt. Hamill: "At ease.  Captain Miller, Second Rangers, wants a word with you."       Capt. Miller (taking him a few steps away with Capt. Hamill): "This way.  Take a knee.  (Heavy sigh)  Private, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you.  (Looking at Hamill)  Well, there isn't any real easy way to say this, so, uh... so I'll just say it.  Your brothers are dead," as Ryan stares stunned, "We have orders to come get you, 'cause your goin' home."        Everyone looks on as Ryan slowly processes the news -- eventually turning away to his captain (who puts an arm around him) as he begins to whimper: "Oh, my God.  My brothers are dead.  I was going to take them fishing when I got home."          Hamill: "I'm so sorry, James.  I can't tell you how much."           Ryan (to Miller): "How... how did they die?"        Miller: "They were killed in action."       Ryan (confused): "That can't be.  That's can't be.  My brothers are still in grammar school."       Miller: "You're James Ryan?"      Ryan (still whimpering): "Yeah."      Miller: "James Francis Ryan from Iowa?"       Ryan: "James Frederick Ryan, Minnesota," looking questioningly at both captain's faces, "Does that mean my brothers are okay?"        Miller (sighing): "Yeah, I'm sure they're fine."       Ryan: "Are you sure that they're okay, though?"       Miller: "We're looking for a different Private Ryan," starting to stand, "This is just a big foul-up."       Ryan (still in shock): "How do you know?  How can you be sure?  How do you know that the foul-up isn't that his brothers are okay and..."         Miller: "Lieutenant, I'm sorry for the trouble..."     Ryan (whimpering): "I just wrote them a letter before I left... I gotta get home.  I gotta get home right now..."        (Caution: Lord's name used in vain; men smoking)

Staying in an abandoned church for the night before continuing on their mission to bring Private Ryan home, Capt. Miller discusses with Sgt. Horvath the hard choices military leaders make...      "You see when... when you end up killing one of your men, you tell yourself, it happened so that you could save the lives of two or three, or ten others.  Maybe a hundred others.  You know how many men I've lost under my command?"       Horvath: "How many?"       Miller: "94.  But that means I've saved the lives of ten times that many, doesn't it?  Maybe even 20, right?  20 times as many.  And that's how simple it is.  That's how you... that's how you rationalize making the choice between the mission and the men."      Horvath: "Except this time, the mission is a man."         Miller: "This Ryan better be worth it.  He'd better go home and cure some disease or invent a longer-lasting light bulb or something."

The boys come across an enemy machine gun in a sandbag bunker.  As Captain Miller talks of taking it out, he's met with resistance...      Pvt. Reiben: "I don't know how fast the rest of you Betties are, but I'm thinkin' we detour this way, quick and quiet, the Krauts will never even know we were here," as Miller continues to prepare, "So, Captain, what I'm trying to say is, why don't we just go around the thing?"       Miller (tiredly): "I hear what you're saying.  But we can't go around it."       Pvt. Jackson: "I'm with Reiben on this one, sir.  I mean, we left them 88s."       Miller: "For the Air Force.  The Air Force isn't going to spend ordnance on one machine gun."        Pvt. Mellish: "Uh, Captain... we can still skip it and accomplish our mission.  I mean, this isn't our mission, right, sir?"       Miller: "Oh, that's what you wanna do, Mellish?  You just want to leave it here so they can ambush the next company that comes along?"       Mellish: "No, sir.  That's not what I'm saying.  I'm simply saying, it seems like an unnecessary risk, given our objective... sir."        Miller: "Our objective is to win the war."          Reiben: "Sir, I just, uh... I don't have a good feeling about this one."        Miller: "Well, when was the last time you felt good about anything?" as he grabs his rifle and runs off -- expecting his men to follow.

Going against his troop's objections (see previous Scene), Captain Miller readies the men to take out a German machine gun bunker...      "All right, three runners with suppressing fire.  Mellish, you hook to the right.  I'll go up the middle.  Who's going left?"       Everyone just stares at him.        "Who's going left?!"          After another awkward pause, Pvt. Jackson finally speaks up: "I'll do it.  I'll go left."          Miller: "All right.  Upham, switch off with Jackson.  And you linger in the rear (referring to the timid soldier who's never seen action and has only been brought along to translate).   We advance and keep pressure on him until he has to change out his barrels.  I think we should be able to hit him from grenade range."       Sgt. Horvath (Miller's closest friend): "Maybe I should go up the middle, sir."         Captain: "The way you run?  I don't think so."             Horvath: "Maybe I should go left, sir."           Captain: "Maybe you should shut up!"          The men finish their last minute preparations and take off running while firing their weapons.  Staying behind with the extra gear, Upham hides safely behind a dead cow while machine gun fire and explosions rock the terrain in front of him.  He nervously pulls out a rifle scope and fearfully watches his comrades throw themselves in harm's way.  After the smoke and dust clears, Captain Miller calls for Upham to bring the gear.  Rejoining his squad, Upham discovers the group's medic has been mortally wounded...

After the group takes out an enemy machine gun nest, the entire squad gathers around their one fallen member, Medic Wade, who's taken several bullets to the abdomen.  Everyone has their hands on Wade, some ripping off his shirt, others applying sulfa, others giving him words of encouragement that he'll make it -- all while blood unmercifully pours from his wounds.  Wade shakily gives them advice on how to help him as everyone frantically has their hands on him, trying to assist...      "Put up my legs.... Am I shot?   How does it look?  Am I shot in the spine?  How big is the hole?  ...Oh, my God, my liver!  Oh, God, it's my liver!"           Miller: "What can we do, Wade?  Tell us what to do."      Wade (while gurgling blood): "I could use... I could use a little more morphine."         Miller: "Okay," realizing the doctor is asking for an overdose to end his life, "Give it to him."       Sgt. Horvath administers two more doses.           Wade: "I don't want to die... (Whispering) Mama. ...I wanna go home, I wanna go home...  (Muttering) Mama, Mama, Mama..." before finally passing away.  Every soldiers' hands are covered in his blood, pressing against his wounds.           (Caution: extremely bloody scene)

During an intense situation, Sgt. Mike Horvath points a pistol at Pvt. Reiben's head (who is ready to desert the company due to Captain Miller's decision to let a German prisoner go instead of executing him for killing the company's popular team medic).  Captain Miller shows wisdom in leadership, and quiets the angry men, by finally answering the question that everyone is curious about: what did the Captain do before the war...                 Miller: "Mike?  What's the pool on me up to now?  What's it up to?  What is it?  300 dollars?  I'm a schoolteacher.  I teach English composition, in this little town called Addley, Pennsylvania," as Horvath lowers his weapon.       "In the last 11 years, I've been at Thomas Alva Edison High School.  I was a coach of the baseball team in the springtime."         Horvath: "I'll be doggone."         Miller: "Back home, when I'd tell people what I do for a living, they'd think, 'Well, that figures.'  But over here, it's a big... a big mystery.  So I guess I've changed some.  Sometimes I wonder if I've changed so much, my wife is even going to recognize me whenever it is I get back to her.  And how I'll ever be able to... to tell her about days like today.  Uh, Ryan (the object of their mission)...  I don't' know anything about Ryan, I don't care.  The man means nothing to me, it's just a name.  But if, you know, going to Ramelle and finding him so he can go home, if that earns me the right to get back to my wife, well then that's my mission.  (Then to Reiben)  You wanna leave?  You want to go off and fight the war?  All right, I won't stop you.  I'll even put in the paperwork.  Just know, that every man I kill, the farther away from home I feel."        Reiben decides not to leave as the Captain starts to bury the dead.       (Caution: profanity just before starting cue)

The company finally finds a disconnected group of soldiers, including the focus of their mission, Private Ryan...        Corporal Henderson: "So what are you guys all about?"       Captain Miller: "We're here for him.  Ryan," pointing to the soldier.        Ryan: "Me, sir?"         Miller waves him over.      "James Francis Ryan of Iowa?"      Ryan: "Yes, sir.  Peyton, Iowa.  That's correct.  What is this about?"         Miller: "Your brothers were killed in combat."      Ryan, the fourth and youngest brother, asks emotionally: "Which ones?"       Miller: "All of them."      Ryan (trying to process): "On the level?"      Miller: "Yeah, I'm afraid so.  Uh, you might want to take some time with this.  If there's someplace you want to go..."        Ryan (tearing up): "You came all the way out here to tell me that?"        Miller: "You're going home.  Our orders are to bring you back."        Ryan: "Bring me back?"          Miller (turning away): "Corporal Henderson, I don't mean to leave you even more shorthanded, but orders are orders.  Uh, any communication about when you're going to be relieved up here?"       Henderson: "Sir, there's no way to tell.   I mean, we have no idea what's happening south of us."        Ryan: "I have my orders too, sir.  They don't include me abandoning my post!"          Miller: "I understand, but this changes things."        Ryan: "I don't see that it does, sir."       Miller: "The Chief of Staff for the United States Army says it does."          Henderson: "Sir, our orders are to hold this bridge at all costs.  Now, our planes in the 82nd have taken out every bridge across the Merderet with the exception of two: One at Valognes and this one here.  We let the Germans take it, we're going to lose our foothold and have to displace."       Miller: "Private.  You're outfit wants to stay, that's one thing.  But your party's over here."       Ryan: "Sir, I can't leave until at least reinforcements get here..."         Miller (cutting him off): "You've got three minutes to gather your gear."       Ryan: "Sir, what about them?" pointing to the other weathered soldiers in his squad, "there's barely hardly..."          Reiben (from Millers' squad): "Hey, a--h---!  Two of our guys already died trying to find you, all right?"       Ryan (to Miller): "Sir?"       Miller: "That's right."         Ryan approaches Reiben and his buddies: "What were their names?"     Mellish: "Irwin Wade and Adrian Caparzo."          Ryan: "Wade and...?"        Mellish: "Caparzo."               Ryan, walking off thinking: "It doesn't make any sense.  (To Miller)  It doesn't make any sense, sir!  Why do I deserve to go?  Why not any of these guys?  They all fought just as hard as me!"       Miller: "Is that what they're supposed to tell your mother when they send her another folded American flag?"      Ryan (jaw set): "Tell her that when you found me, I was here, and I was with the only brothers that I have left, and there was no way that I was gonna desert them.  I think she'll understand that.  There's no way I'm leaving this bridge," as he walks away.         (Caution: the profanity "a--h---" is used)

While the men are trying to protect a bridge and hold off a swarm of Germans, Mellish is out of ammo on the second floor of a building -- in a hand-to-hand struggle for his life with a German soldier.  Corporal Upham -- the timid soldier who's never seen action and has only been brought along to translate -- is scared spitless and is slowly climbing the stairs toward Mellish.  Upham's one job is to deliver ammo to the men in need, which Mellish has been yelling for.  Mellish and the German continue to struggle when Mellish pulls out his bayonet.  The larger German wrangles the knife from the American and slowly begins lowering it toward Mellish's chest -- all while Upham (gun and ammo in hand) continues creeping up the stairs beyond the door!     Mellish screams up at his enemy, as the German continues lowering the bayonet (all while speaking softly in German, translated to be: "Give up, you don't stand a chance... let's end this here... it will be easier for you, much easier...  you'll see, it will be over quickly").           Mellish (trying to hold his attacker's hand back): "Listen to me!  Listen to me!  Stop!  Stop!"          But the German shushes the American and slowly lowers the blade into his chest, killing him.         (Caution: extremely violent scene)

After losing most of his men to protect a bridge, Captain Miller lies seriously wounded, thankful for the American reinforcements swarming in to drive the Germans back.  Pvt. Ryan walks up as Pvt. Reiben runs off and frantically calls for a medic...         Ryan (looking up at US planes screaming by): "They're tank-busters, sir.  P-51s."       Miller (weakly): "Angels on our shoulders..."       Miller mumbles something.      Ryan: "What, sir?"       Miller pulls Ryan closer, whispering in his ear: "James... earn this (referring to the loss of American lives -- including his own -- given to bring Ryan home).  Earn it."   Miller passes away.              As Ryan looks at Miller's body, the narration of General Marshall's letter to Ryan's mother follows: "My dear Mrs. Ryan: It's with the most profound sense of joy that I write to inform you, your son, Private James Ryan, is well and, at this very moment, on his way home from European battlefields.  Reports from the front indicate James did his duty in combat with great courage and steadfast dedication, even after he was informed of the tragic loss your family has suffered in this great campaign to rid the world of tyranny and oppression.  I take great pleasure in joining the Secretary of War, the men and women of the United States Army, and the citizens of a grateful nation, in wishing you good health and many years of happiness with James at your side.  Nothing, not even the safe return of a beloved son, can compensate you, or the thousands of other American families, who have suffered great loss in this tragic war.  And I might share with you some words which have sustained me through long, dark nights of peril, loss and heartache.  And I quote, 'I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.'  Abraham Lincoln.  Yours very sincerely and respectfully, George C. Marshall, General, Chief of Staff."

While staring at Captain Miller's dead body on the battlefield (who gave his life to rescue the young soldier -- see previous Scenes), James Ryan's eyes are highlighted as his face is morphed to the elderly man he is in the present -- visiting the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-mer (see first Scene).   The elderly man kneels in front of Captain Miller's gravestone...     "My family is with me today.  They wanted to come with me.  To be honest with you, I wasn't sure how I'd feel coming back here.  Every day, I think about what you said to me that day on the bride (previous Scene).  I've tried to live my life the best I could.  I hope that was enough.  I hope that at least, in your eyes, I've earned what all of you have done for me."           Mr. Ryan's wife walks up and joins him: "James?" now looking at the gravestone, 'Captain John H. Miller.'  "          Mr. Ryan looks deep into her eyes: "Tell me I've led a good life."         Mrs. Ryan: "Whaaat?"        Mr. Ryan: "Tell me I'm a good man."
